|The Island Greens once again made history on April 23rd, forming Canada's first Green Official Opposition.|
It has been exactly four years since I was first elected on May 4th, 2015, and 11 days since PEI elected a record number of Green MLAs to the Legislative Assembly. We could not have done this without the time, talent, and dollars that you dedicated to local campaigns across this province. Not only did we see eight MLAs elected, but we had strong second place finishes from tip to tip. Thank you.
I wanted to take a moment to share some of what has been going on since election day. I have met with Dennis King, the leader of the Progressive Conservatives, and we have begun preliminary discussions about what collaboration could look like in the Legislative Assembly moving forward. I will continue to share updates with you as these conversations unfold.
There is still uncertainty about how the three parties will work together in a minority situation. Yet I feel confident we can create a model that will be an inspiration to other jurisdictions, just as the conduct of all parties throughout this election has impressed political commentators across the country.
I have also sat down with our team of Green MLAs to discuss our immediate priorities and plans for the first sitting of the Legislature, which will probably be in June. We are already working on a number of bills and motions. We will continue to focus our attention on the development of good evidence-based policy and holding government to account.
I am honoured and humbled by the trust Islanders have placed in me and in the other seven Green MLAs. You can rest assured that we will continue to work for you as we work for all Islanders.

While the election of a record number of Green MLAs was the culmination of years of hard work by dedicated volunteers, the April 23rd election was by no means the end of a process, but a key milestone in the growth of the Green Party of PEI.
We have now entered a new era in PEI politics and in the Green Party. As the party of the Official Opposition, we have much work ahead of us to serve Islanders, develop and implement Green policies, and become a government-in-waiting. All over the Island, members energized by the election are looking to keep the momentum going with the establishment of Electoral District Associations.
You are invited to be a part of the next great leap forward, whether by joining us on Provincial Council or on one of our committees, or getting together with others in your district to continue building community while supporting current and future Green MLAs.
Earlier this week, we announced a process by which people can apply to seek the Green nomination for the upcoming District 9 by-election (which must take place place before July 19th), as well as how nomination contestants will be selected. The application deadline is Tuesday, May 7th at 5pm, and a nomination meeting will take place at the Hillsborough Park Community Centre on Friday, May 24th at 7pm.

Many of the dedicated volunteers on the late Josh Underhay's District 9 team are enthusiastic about carrying on the work that they and Josh started months ago, and electing a Green MLA to represent District 9. The elements of a successful by-election are already coming together!
In the coming days, we will be making key by-election campaign preparations. One way you can help right now is by making a contribution to the Green Party of PEI to help ensure we are financially prepared to run a strong, winning campaign in District 9.
Did you know that, on the opposite end of the country, on another island, there is another exciting election being closely watched by Green across Canada?
On Monday, May 6th, voters in Nanaimo-Ladysmith on Vancouver Island will be heading to the polls in the last by-election before the federal election. Polls show that Green candidate Paul Manly is running neck-and-neck with the NDP candidate and, if elected, will help break ground as the second federal Green MP to be elected after Elizabeth May!
With as many voters in Nanaimo-Ladysmith as in the whole of Prince Edward Island, Paul Manly needs all the help he can get to push his campaign over the top and set the stage for a successful federal election for Greens across Canada.
This weekend and on Monday, volunteers from PEI can help by joining the remote phone bank and helping make phone calls to voters in Nanaimo. In by-elections, voter awareness and turnout is often substantially less than in general elections, so your calls can help make a big difference and get Elizabeth May a seatmate in Parliament even before the federal election!
