John Andrew - District 9 Green Party Candidate
John Andrew is a fourth-generation Andrew resident of the scenic Andrew’s Mills property on Oakland Drive in East Royalty. He attended East Royalty School, Prince of Wales College and Dalhousie University, received a PhD in physics from the University of Alberta and was later certified as a medical physicist. During his undergraduate years he served as an officer in the Canadian Army. For 15 years he was the Head of Medical Physics at the QEII in Halifax. Because of his experience in building, equipping and working in cancer centres, in 2002 he was asked by the PEI government to consult on enlarging the Queen Elizabeth Hospital cancer facility to allow most radiotherapy patients to be treated on the Island. When the expansion was uncertain because of the province’s inability to attract additional physics staff, Dr. Andrew developed an interprovincial agreement that allowed Halifax physicists to be seconded to work on PEI. Under the agreement, Dr. Andrew moved home to P.E.I., and worked as one of the medical physicists until he retired in 2016. During his career he published over 40 research papers, was on the executive of national medical organizations for 14 years, rose to the rank of Full Professor at Dalhousie University and was made a Fellow of the Canadian Organization of Medical Physicists.
When he moved back home, it was apparent that years of siltation from urban development had taken its toll on the Wright’s Creek watercourse. At a meeting of concerned individuals, the Wright’s Creek Watershed Environmental Committee was formed, with John Andrew as a Co-Chair with Darren Riggs. They set about in a systematic manner to acquire funding, build sediment traps, rock-line eroding storm water channels, dig out springs, and remove much of the sediment from Andrew’s Pond. Several years of building trails, docks, and observation decks ensued, along with the installation of historical and nature signage.
Dr. Andrew also serves as a Director of the Hillsborough River Association and the Hillsborough Area Watershed Co-op and as President of the Prince of Wales College Alumni Executive.
Over the years, Dr. Andrew has received many awards, including Citizen Recognition Awards from both Halifax and Charlottetown, Boy Scout leader awards, Heritage, Volunteer and Community in Bloom awards from the City of Charlottetown, a Heritage Activity Award from the province of PEI, and a Distinguished Alumni Award from UPEI.
Dr. Andrew and his wife, Dr. Christine Andrew, have two children, both physicians, working in Halifax and Victoria BC.
Dr. Andrew’s work in the community has had significant media coverage. A few examples are:
John says: “I am motivated to become an MLA by the excellent proposals for PEI in the Green Policy Statement and by the fact that Josh Underhay, with whom I have spent considerable time discussing climate change, alternate transportation, the environment and a cooperative approach to government, will not be here to promote necessary changes. I believe my past professional and community involvement bodes well for my being a successful, communicative and caring MLA.”
