District 15 West Royalty - Springvale
Liz Vaine
Originally from a southwestern Ontario farming community, Liz moved to PEI in 1976 to attend Holland College School of Visual Arts to study weaving and silversmithing. The beauty of the Island and the rural way of life were major reasons for her decision to stay and live here. While working part-time as a weaver, Liz was involved with the National Farmers’ Union as a researcher and helped create a documentary film about the decline of the small family farm.
She married and moved to Vermont in the late 70’s where she became involved in the growing Organic Growers’ movement, food cooperatives and Social Justice. In 1982, she moved back to PEI, bought land and built an environmentally healthy and energy-efficient home. On this acreage, she started a large organic market garden and was one of the early founders of the Certified Organic Growers’ Association.
Liz and her partner, Larry Cosgrave (former Green Party candidate for West Royalty - Springvale) live life gently on the Earth and advocate an organic, green and sustainable lifestyle. She is currently a chef at the Dunes where local and organic foods are used as much as possible. Cafe staff is avid about recycling (ie pioneering recyclable “doggy bags”) and has supported an African village for many years. Liz has embodied the principles of the Green Party since her early years and now offers her services in the political arena.
