Charles Sanderson is committed to social justice and gay rights, true democracy, and strong self reliant communities. He has lived of PEI his whole life and sees our island’s health as the number one election issue this fall. This is why he is running for the Green Party of PEI in Charlottetown, Lewis Point. Charles has spent the last three years studying our economy at UPEI School of Business while also researching how human impact is affecting our plant through an environmental study minor. Charles is ready to fight for PEI to ensure future generations can enjoy a clean, healthy, and green island.
As a boy Charles started his first green business raising free-range chickens for his community. Since then he has been involved with the Red Cross and Lifesaving Society organizing swimming lessons, small craft safety instruction, and leading young environmentalist groups. His work with youth in leadership positions has validated his recognition of the gaps in thinking about environmental issues between his generation and the next.
Charles enjoys reading both fiction and non-fiction. Recently he has found the internationally acclaimed “seasick” by Allana Morrison to give a heart wrenching account of the issues effecting oceans currents and populations.
“If all like on land were to vanish tomorrow, creatures in the ocean would flourish. But if the opposite happened and the ocean’s life perished, then the creatures on land would die too. Life, if it went on, would have to start over.” – Sea Sick
He takes an active interest in sustainable production of food working in the chemical free family vegetable garden. Charles is expanding this hobby by starting a small green house. He is nutrition conscious ‘flexitarian’ by limiting all dairy and meat products in his diet. He studies and practices yoga and believes it enhances his quality of life.
As a young business student, Charles sees the need to re-structure our local economy. This can be achieved through a tax shift. Markets for locally produced goods are growing and the impact of this can be seen in our economy and islanders health. It is time for government to get on board. A green tax shift would support industrious local producers and providers giving rural PEI an economic boost. Charles also stresses the need for a real transportation policy. As gas prices continue to rise, young people are looking to governments to develop alternative transportation to the private car. Instead what we are seeing in money continuing to be spend on highway infrastructure. The green party encourages strong comminutes through incentives for small business, the back-bone to our island economy, and by supporting alternative transportation.
Charles Sanderson is dedicated to improving the lives of others while keeping our planet healthy. Charles has forwarded these ideals through volunteer work in his community, the Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Red Cross and various other charities. A strong supporter of green initiatives Charles became interested in the Green Party at an early age. He is proud to be running in his first election as a green party candidate in District 14 Charlottetown - Lewis Point.
